As dairy farms expand, adding cows to the operation often requires hiring employees with the skills to manage all of the tasks associated with large dairy operations. Unfortunately, English is not the primary language for Spanish-speaking dairy workers. To further compound the problem, university-based training materials addressing skills in both English and Spanish are limited.
Developed by UW-Extension Kewaunee County Agriculture Agent Aerica Bjurstrom, the Biligual Dairy Workers’ Flashcards are cards using visuals and terminology in English and Spanish to help communicate specific tasks on the operation. Terms are related to the cow, milking parlor, milking barn, hospital barn, and the office.
