Salford Group Launches the AB640 90-Foot Air Boom Applicator

Ontario, — Salford Group proudly introduces the new AB640 90-foot air boom applicator. This applicator combines the high-capacity features of Salford’s 9620 pull-type applicator with the durability and precision of the 90-foot booms on Salford chassis-mounted applicators. It delivers unprecedented efficiency and accurate application of fertilizer, crop protection products, and seed.

The AB640 air boom applicator boosts operational efficiency by covering 22% more ground per pass compared to traditional 70-foot applicators. Its impressive 90-foot swath reduces the number of passes needed, saving time and minimizing soil compaction. Producers can slow down without sacrificing overall application speed.

With a massive 640 cubic foot hopper, a heavy-duty walking tandem, and dual 800r/65 tires, the AB640 ensures safe and comfortable handling. A 100 cubic foot micro-bin with optional secondary metering allows precise application of micro-nutrients or crop protection products. This enables producers to accomplish more with each pass.

A Raven RCM controls precision application on the AB640, managing variable rate functions and left/right section control for the main hopper metering and the micro-bin. The optional Raven XRT auto-boom technology maintains a consistent boom height. It protects the boom from ground strikes and enhances application precision by maintaining proper pattern overlap.

“Salford’s Valmar air boom applicators are known for robust performance and precision,” said Gavin Held, Application Equipment Product Manager at Salford Group. “With the AB640, we’ve improved these machines with a greater application width, enhanced hydraulic metering, and other great features. These advancements benefit crop producers by boosting efficiency and enabling more precise input management. These are critical factors in crop production.”

Ease of use is crucial in the AB640’s design. It features built-in sight windows, an electric roll tarp, and grease banks that simplify maintenance and enhance the operational experience.

“The AB640 demonstrates Salford’s leadership in soil management and nutrient application equipment,” stated David Webster, President of Salford Group. “This applicator meets the evolving crop fertility and protection needs of modern producers.”

The AB640 90-foot air boom applicator is now available for purchase from select Salford dealers. It will debut at the Ag In Motion (AIM) farm show from July 16 to 18 in Langham, near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Visit Salford at booth 640.

Farmers looking to elevate their productivity and precision in crop management should contact their Salford dealer or Salford Group for more information.

Field Talk Friday | Dr. John Murphy | Root Exudates, Soil Biology, and How Plants Recruit Microbes

Most of us spend our time managing what we can see above ground—plant height, leaf color, stand counts, and yield potential. But the deeper you dig into agronomy, the more you realize that some of the most important processes driving crop performance are happening just millimeters below the surface.

In this episode of Field Talk Friday, Dr. John Murphy continues the soil biology series by diving into one of the most fascinating topics in modern agronomy: root exudates and the role they play in shaping the microbial world around plant roots.

Roots are not passive structures simply pulling nutrients out of the soil. They are active participants in the underground ecosystem. Plants constantly release compounds into the soil—sugars, amino acids, organic acids, and other molecules—that act as both energy sources and signals for soil microbes.
