Farmers to visit Union Station to thank Ontario consumers

Toronto – In celebration of Ontario Agriculture Week, Ontario’s farmers will be in the Go
York Concourse of Union Station on Wednesday, October 3, meeting with Ontario consumers, thanking
commuters for buying local and supporting farm families and handing out recipes and Ontario products.

Wednesday’s event is a collaboration between many Ontario farm organizations and is the first time farmers
have ever held an event in Union Station. Farmers will be in attendance from 7 to 8:30 a.m. greeting
commuters as they arrive into work and again from 4 to 5:30 p.m. as commuters head home. They’ll be
answering questions about their farms and handing out recipes and local food snacks.

Media are invited to attend the event and interview local farmers who are participating. Ontario Minister of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman and Randy Pettapiece, Parliamentary Assistant to the
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will also be in attendance in the morning.

Ontario is a province overflowing with nutritious and delicious food. For 20 years, Ontario has celebrated
Ontario Agriculture Week which recognizes the province’s 37,000 farm families and the work that they do to
produce more than 125 different types of products. From the farmers’ market or your grocery cart to the
dinner table, Ontarians can enjoy the province’s bounty of Ontario dairy, grains, eggs, flowers, meats, fruits
and vegetables all year long.

“Farmers in Ontario feel it’s a great honour and privilege to feed our country. Ontario Agriculture Week is our
chance to say thank you for buying our food,” says Christine Schoonderwoerd, chair of Farm & Food Care
Ontario. “By supporting local food, you support farmers, the environment and stronger communities.”
