Grain Farmers of Ontario Congratulates Lisa Thompson as New Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs

Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province’s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario’s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean and wheat farmers, today extends its congratulations to Lisa Thompson, Member of Provincial Parliament for Huron-Bruce on her appointment as the provincial Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Minister Thompson has continuously advocated for agriculture in her various roles in the provincial government.

“Ontario grain farmers provide more than $18 billion in economic value and 75,000 jobs to the province and we look forward to working closely with Minister Thompson to ensure that agriculture in Ontario is as successful as it needs to be,” said Brendan Byrne, Chair, Grain Farmers of Ontario. “Minister Thompson understands the need of rural communities and farmers, and we know she will look for new ways of supporting and helping grow farm businesses and rural economies.”

“We are thrilled to see this new appointment and we wish Minister Thompson all the best in her new role,” said Crosby Devitt, CEO, Grain Farmers of Ontario. “With COVID disruptions, trade disputes, volatile markets, and high levels of business risk for farmers, Ontario agriculture needs a strong voice and advocate who understands farmers and farming businesses.”

Grain Farmers of Ontario also extends its thanks to Ernie Hardeman, who served as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for the past three years.
