Guelph, ON – Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province’s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario’s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean, and wheat farmers, congratulates Mark Carney, sworn in today as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada and Kody Blois, sworn in as the new minister of Agriculture and Agri Food.
During this period of instability and unpredictability due to tariff threats from the U.S. and China, Ontario’s grain farmers need a strong federal government response to ensure that the industry’s priorities are considered in any negotiations.
“The agriculture industry is a backbone of the Canadian economy,” says Jeff Harrison, chair of Grain Farmers of Ontario. “Grain Farmers of Ontario encourages the prime minister and the new minister of agriculture to continue to fight for the interests of Ontario and Canadian farmers.”
“Minister Blois has shown support for Grain Farmers of Ontario’s priorities around the carbon tax and fertilizer tariffs,” says Crosby Devitt, Grain Farmers of Ontario’s CEO. “We look forward to working with him as part of the new government.”
With a federal election on the horizon Grain Farmers of Ontario will be advocating for policies that ensure the economic viability and sustainability of Ontario grain farmers.
Grain farming in Ontario is the foundation for 90,000 of the province’s jobs and is responsible for $27 billion in economic output.
