India Increases Tariff On Canadian Lentils

Canadian lentil exporters are once again facing a 30 per cent tariff on exports to India.

The tariff was temporarily reduced to 10 per cent over the summer.

Mac Ross, Manager of Market Access and Trade Policy with Pulse Canada, explains how this might affect lentil exports to India going forward.

"There was a lot of purchases that happened over the last couple months. There's the potential for that to slow down. I think we would have seen that regardless. We know that harvest is well underway right now in Western Canada and all indications is that it will be another large crop, so it will be very important for us to continue to work with India to ensure there's some predictability and transparency moving forward in how these trade policy decisions are made."

The tariff for U.S. origin lentils is 50 per cent.
