Matthias Oppenlaender steps down as chair, Grape Growers of Ontario

At the Grape Growers of Ontario 78th annual general meeting on April 1, Matthias Oppenlaender announced to 115 attending members that he is stepping down as chair after 10 years at the helm. The grape grower from Niagara-on-the-Lake has dedicated a total of 20 years on the board, in various capacities.

“It has been a true honour and privilege to serve, and I am proud of the progress we have made together to support Ontario’s grape growers and strengthen our industry,” said Oppenlaender.
“2025 was a transformational year, with strong growth and positive progress. As we look ahead, it is important that we continue to build on this path.”

The 2026 Award of Merit recognized the significant contributions of longtime IPM specialist Margaret Appleby. She has worked closely with growers and researchers to advance practical, research‑based approaches for grape production. Her leadership was especially impactful in Prince Edward County, where her technical guidance and IPM initiatives helped establish the region as a respected wine‑growing area. Now retired, Margaret continues to support the sector as a consultant and educator.
