MCGA Meets with MASC: Keeping Agri-Insurance Aligned with Farmers’ Needs

This March, the Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA) met with the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) for our annual consultation on the Agri-Insurance program for canola. These meetings are an important opportunity to review program performance over the past year and, just as importantly, ensure it continues to reflect the realities farmers face in their fields.

A key focus this year was looking ahead. One area of interest was how crop insurance data could play a larger role in research. With the volume of high-quality production data collected through Agri-Insurance, there is significant potential to generate new insights into canola production in Manitoba.

The conversation also turned to future product considerations. This included discussion around the potential introduction of canola-quality Brassica juncea. As new crop types and hybrids emerge, it’s important that insurance programs keep pace so farmers have appropriate coverage options when trying something new.

Beyond individual products, we also explored the broader policy environment. With the federal government currently reviewing Business Risk Management (BRM) programs, changes may be on the horizon that could impact Agri-Insurance. Ongoing dialogue helps ensure Manitoba farmers’ perspectives are represented and that any future adjustments strengthen, rather than hinder, on-farm risk management.

Evolving farm practices were another important part of the discussion. For example, tile drainage is changing on-farm risk profiles by improving soil conditions and resilience. At the same time, the growth of large farms operating across multiple regions raises questions about how to best reflect this diversity in risk assessment and coverage.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. We also have a part-time employee, Brock. My dad started the farm in 1980. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.

I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
