For seven summers now, sunflowers have bloomed in Lambton County in memory of a youngster who inspired Miracle Max’s Minions.
“It’s pretty awesome,” said Brian Schoonjans, who launched the annual event when he planted a field of sunflowers at his Douglas Line farm in memory of Max Rombouts, 2, the son of family friends, who died of leukemia.
Schoonjans invited the public to stroll paths in the field, take selfies, pick sunflowers to take home and leave donations for children’s health charities.
Sunflowers were planted again in the years that followed, and other local farms and locations, and other fundraisers, joined in.
“We have a solid team that I think all fill their cups by having people out to their farms and watch them enjoy the sunflowers,” Schoonjans said.
