Ottawa, ON – Farmers are very familiar with the saying, “You reap what you sow.” This applies to everything from crops to personal development. Cultivate your potential with a 2026 Nuffield Canada Scholarship. Applications close June 30.

The Nuffield Canada Scholarship is a prestigious rural thought-leadership program available to Canadian citizens who are involved in any aspect of agriculture. Its goal is to attract mid-career men and women who are ready to challenge themselves by doing 10 weeks of self-directed international travel study to examine and research an agricultural topic they are passionate about. Once travel is completed, Scholars sum up their findings in a written report (approx. 10,000 words) and presentation to the Nuffield Canada at their annual general meeting.

Nuffield Canada Scholarships, selected through a written and one-way video application process, are awarded to enterprising Canadians between the ages of 25 – 50(ish) with a passion for agriculture. Scholarship recipients can come from all areas of primary production including food, fibre, health care, biofuels, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. Recipients can represent any aspect of the value chain such as primary production, processing, governance, communications, safety, mental health, and others. Nuffield Canada values diversity and encourages applicants from all production philosophies such as commercial, organic, cottage, medicinal, Indigenous, Halal, Kosher and others. Video: Finding a Balance of Innovation and Regulation - Dr. Peter Facchini

Regulations help markets and industry exist on level playing fields, keeping consumers safe and innovation from going too far. However, incredibly strict regulations can stunt innovation and cause entire industries to wither away. Dr. Peter James Facchini brings his perspective on how existing regulations have slowed the advancement of medical developments within Canada. Given the international concern of opium poppy’s illicit potential, Health Canada must abide by this global policy. But with modern technology pushing the development of many pharmaceuticals to being grown via fermentation, is it time to reconsider the rules?

Dr. Peter James Facchini leads research into the metabolic biochemistry in opium poppy at the University of Calgary. For more than 30 years, his work has contributed to the increased availability of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthetic genes to assist in the creation of morphine for pharmaceutical use. Dr. Facchini completed his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto before completing Postdoctoral Fellowships in Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky in 1992 & Université de Montréal in 1995.
