Ontario Soybean Planting Mostly Finished

Ontario soybean planting has basically now wrapped up for the year. 

The latest weekly field observations report from Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) on Thursday pegged soybean planting at 99% complete as of Wednesday, up 3 points from the previous week. Corn and spring cereals planting in the province is already finished.

Soybeans are up to the fourth trifoliate (V4) in many areas, with some later-planted fields just emerging, the GFO report said. In recent weeks, some soybeans were struggling in areas that had very heavy rain after planting, which created crusting and slowed emergence. Recent rains have hopefully loosened those heavier soils, allowing soybeans to emerge, it added. 

Corn development has been rapid, with heat units accumulating quickly before the recent cooler weather. Much of the corn crop is between emergence (VE) and the V8 stage (nine-leaf).  As corn plants develop, plant variability is showing up as evidence of compaction damage from tillage or planting when conditions were too wet.   

Spring cereals range from emergence to stem elongation stage, depending on planting date and location in the province.
