Outstanding Young Farmers Crowned

Canada's Outstanding Young Farmers for 2013 were recognized as part of the national awards banquet held on Friday in conjunction with Agribition in Regina.

The winners were Mike Kalivaart and Karen Jansen, grain farmers from Alberta, and Nova Scotia dairy farmers Amanda and James Kinsman.

Derek Jansen, past president of the organization, said the seven nominees were very diverse, making the judging difficult.

"People are getting excited about agriculture, and that's going to be key to bringing more young people into agriculture in the future," he noted.

Manitoba's honourees were Tyler and Dorelle Fulton, cattle producers from the Birtle area.

Each year the OYF program includes the presentation of the WR Motherwell Award to an individual or couple who have promoted excellence in Canadian agriculture. This year's recipient was Kim McConnell, former CEO of AdFarm.
