Pork Producers Fear Broader Trade Issues Could Shape CUSMA Outcome

As North American trade discussions continue, Canadian pork producers are watching closely—not because pork has become a central point of contention, but because unrelated trade disputes could ultimately influence the industry’s future.

On July 1, the United States declined to extend the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA/USMCA) for another 16-year term, triggering the agreement’s annual review process and opening the possibility for any participating country to withdraw with six months’ notice. While the move does not immediately alter trade rules, it introduces a new layer of uncertainty for industries that depend on stable cross-border commerce.

Florian Possberg, partner at Polar Pork Farms in Saskatchewan, says the uncertainty itself is becoming one of the biggest concerns for pork producers.
