Trade review could strengthen markets for farmers across North America

The ongoing review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is an important issue for American farmers and ranchers. As trade discussions continue, agricultural groups are encouraging leaders to protect and strengthen relationships with Canada's and Mexico's markets.

Canada and Mexico remain two of the most important customers for U.S. agricultural products. Together, they purchase nearly one-third of all U.S. agricultural exports. Products ranging from grains and oilseeds to livestock and specialty crops are shipped across North America every day.

In 2025, agricultural exports to Mexico reached nearly $31 billion, while exports to Canada totaled almost $29 billion. These strong trading relationships help farmers sell their products, support rural jobs, and encourage long-term investment in agriculture.

The review process gives the United States, Canada, and Mexico an opportunity to build on the successes of the agreement while addressing remaining trade challenges. Industry leaders believe maintaining a stable and predictable trade environment is essential for farm families facing economic pressures and rising production costs.

Key priorities include expanding market access for U.S. dairy products and addressing seasonal import challenges that affect fruit and vegetable growers. Improved access to foreign markets can create new opportunities for producers while helping strengthen farm profitability.

Reliable export markets are especially important because farming decisions are made months or years before products are sold. Farmers need confidence that customers will be available when crops are harvested and livestock reach market weight.

Strong trade agreements also benefit industries beyond agriculture. Transportation companies, processors, manufacturers, and many rural businesses rely on cross-border trade activities to support jobs and economic growth.

As negotiations continue, agricultural organizations will advocate for an agreement that supports growth, improves market opportunities, and keeps North American agriculture competitive. A modernized USMCA can help strengthen family farms, rural communities, and the overall agricultural economy for years to come.
