Farm Bureau expands agriculture education through innovative school programs
Arkansas Farm Bureau is helping students gain a better understanding of agriculture through a statewide elementary education initiative. The program was created to teach young learners where food, renewable fuel, and fiber come from while increasing agricultural literacy across communities.
The effort began after Farm Bureau members recognized a growing gap in public understanding of agriculture. Working with education leaders, lawmakers, and industry stakeholders, a plan was developed to introduce agriculture education into elementary school classrooms.
A statewide pilot program was launched to encourage schools to include agriculture topics in their lessons. Schools from both urban and rural areas joined the initiative, demonstrating strong interest in helping students connect with agriculture and natural resources.
Teachers participating in the program receive professional development and access to grade-appropriate learning materials. Lessons cover important topics such as agricultural systems, natural resources, leadership, career readiness, and the foundations of agriculture. The curriculum is designed to fit existing education standards while making learning engaging and practical.
Schools have flexibility in how they deliver the lessons. Some teachers discuss agriculture as part of weekly classroom activities, while others integrate the subject into science, math, and other academic areas. The program has also encouraged schools to build connections with local agricultural leaders and community organizations.
The initiative continues to grow and now reaches students in a variety of learning environments, including traditional and virtual classrooms. By introducing agriculture concepts at an early age, schools are helping students better understand the industries that support everyday life.
The program highlights the value of collaboration between educators and agricultural organizations. Through hands-on learning and real-world examples, students gain knowledge about farming, food production, and environmental stewardship.
