Producer Cooperative Acquires Calihan Pork Processors from American Foods Group

Calihan Processing Cooperative announced the successful closing of its acquisition of Calihan Pork Processors, a division of American Foods Group. This transaction marks the cooperative’s first official act of business, establishing a strong foundation for its producer-led approach to cull sow processing, the company said in a release.

“This is a defining moment for our cooperative,” says Matt Bradshaw, president of the Calihan Processing Cooperative Board of Directors. “The more than 30 producers who came together to make this acquisition possible are demonstrating what’s achievable when we unite around a common goal. We’re building something that reflects our values and secures a future we can all be proud of.”

The acquisition was finalized on Nov. 14. Operations at Calihan Pork Processors will continue without interruption, the release said. In addition, Jason Jones and the existing leadership team at the plant will remain in place, ensuring continuity, stability and a smooth transition for employees and customers.

“Calihan has become a much stronger company in many areas having been part of American Foods Group and the Calihan team was fortunate to be part of a great organization,” says Jason Jones, CEO of Calihan Processing Cooperative, in a release. “We’re looking forward to starting a new chapter at Calihan while continuing to serve our customers and support our employees under the new ownership structure. The transition to a producer-led cooperative brings new energy and long-term vision to our operation, and we’re excited to help drive that future forward.”

Calihan Processing Cooperative is managed by Professional Swine Management, LLC. This cooperative is governed by a board of directors composed of swine producers who are committed to building a more resilient and transparent supply chain. These directors include Matt Bradshaw, Phil Borgic, Brian Martin, Matt Gent, Aaron Lower, DVM, and advisors Bill Hollis, DVM, and Dave Delaney.

Ted Ufkes, CEO of Professional Swine Management, says, “We are proud to support a model that puts producers in the driver’s seat, ensuring that operational excellence and long-term sustainability are at the forefront of cull sow processing.”
