Saskatchewan NDP seeking government support for cattle producers

The Saskatchewan New Democrats are calling on the Saskatchewan Party government and Ottawa to provide support with livestock producers dealing with  severe drought conditions.

NDP Deputy Shadow Minister for Agriculture Trent Wotherspoon says the opposition has put together a three-point plan that they’d like the two levels of government to adopt, including the creation of a drought action committee, which includes representation from producers, agricultural groups and rural municipalities, to plan and deliver a coordinated drought response when needed.

The second point involves being proactive and improving business risk management programs, to ensure equity for livestock producers, with both the province and Ottawa contributing their share of premiums, the way they do for crop insurance.

Finally, based on a suggestion of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA), the NDP would like to see a ten-year deferral of federal capital gains for cattle producers forced to liquidate their herds, due to drought conditions, that would prevent them from providing adequate feed or water for their animals.

Video: You Be The Judge: Evaluating 8 Breeding Rams!

It's time for some honest feedback here at Ewetopia Farms! Today, we’re showing you all eight rams we used for breeding this year. Instead of just presenting them, we thought it would be fun to create a “Ram Report Card” — where we point out both their strengths and areas for improvement.

But here’s the twist: you be the judge! In the comments, let us know what you like about each ram and what you think could be improved. No ram is ever perfect, but every one of them brings something valuable to the flock. By sharing perspectives, we all learn more about what to look for in good breeding stock.

At Ewetopia Farms, we raise registered Suffolk and Polled Dorset sheep, focusing on high-quality genetics, structure, and friendly temperaments. Evaluating breeding rams is part of the bigger picture of building stronger flocks — and we’re excited to share the process with you.
