Pulse Canada says there hasn't been much movement on the fumigation issue with India.
CEO Gordon Bacon said the prime ministers of both countries had agreed to have a resolution in place by the end of 2018, which did not happen.
"We are still at the same situation where when either peas or lentils from Canada are exported to India, we're paying five times the normal fumigation charge in lieu of having to fumigate with methyl bromide in Canada, which we can't do," he explained. "Canada's position is we do not have the insects of pests that should have us subjected to methyl bromide fumigation. We shouldn't be having to pay any punitive fee because the treatment isn't needed and it's that case that India has asked more time to look at."
Bacon says Canada is at a disadvantage to the U.S. which is still paying the normal fumigation fee.
