USDA Boosts Agricultural Producers and Food Businesses with $320 Million Investment

To support agricultural farmers and food companies across the nation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is injecting $320 million in investment money. These substantial investments, announced by Secretary Tom Vilsack, aim to strengthen markets, stimulate job growth, control food prices, and promote improved nutrition.

Secretary Vilsack emphasized the significance of local and regional food systems in American agriculture during his visit to a market in Manchester, New Hampshire. The USDA's financial support will provide opportunities for mid- and small-sized operators to enhance their supply chains, increase resilience in the food system, and tap into new avenues of growth.

Among the beneficiaries is North Country Growers, which will receive a $19.9 million guaranteed loan to establish a hydroponic greenhouse spanning 20 acres. This initiative aims to cultivate lettuce and leafy greens year-round, producing an estimated 30 million heads of lettuce annually. The project will not only supply local grocery stores, restaurants, and distribution networks throughout the Northeast but also create 84 jobs.

Additional businesses in the agricultural sector will also benefit from the investments. Expansion of production capabilities for a meat market and bison processing facility, equipment purchases for a berry processor to ramp up production, and the growth of sustainable options through a plant-based yogurt manufacturer and a cold storage facility are some of the projects that will receive support.

These investments contribute to the economic strength of small- and mid-sized producers by expanding market opportunities and fostering competition. Moreover, local and regional food systems help minimize costs associated with food distribution, benefiting both producers and consumers. The USDA's commitment to enhancing these vital aspects of the agricultural sector paves the way for a more resilient and sustainable food landscape.
