USDA Reminds New York Producers to Report Prevented Planting, Failed Acres and File Crop Acreage Reports

After spring planting is complete, agricultural producers in New York should make an appointment with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office to complete crop acreage reports before the applicable deadline. In addition, if producers were prevented from planting, or have failed acres due to weather, those should also be reported.

“In order to receive many USDA program benefits, producers should file an accurate crop acreage report as well as prevented plantings by the applicable deadlines,” said Clark Putman, State Executive Director in New York. “Call your local FSA office to make an appointment to report your acreage and take care of any other FSA-related business.”

Prevented Planted Acreage

Producers should also report the crop acreage they intended to plant but were unable to because of weather. Prevented planted acreage must be reported on form CCC-576, Notice of Loss, no later than 15 calendar days after the final planting date as established by FSA and USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA).   According to Putman, the final planting date for corn and soybeans in New York is June 10, so those acres should be reported by June 25.

The progress of a business, just like history, rarely goes in a straight line. A project can begin in one place and end up in another. This is true for one Midwest university food project. Over the past decade, a student guided experience has gone from raising vegetables and fish to becoming a value-added food program that benefits an entire community.
