Warm, Muggy Summer Forecast for Southern Ontario

The Weather Network is forecasting warm, humid conditions for most of southern Ontario and Quebec this summer, but no widespread drought.

The seasonal forecast, released Wednesday, said there should be a quick transition to a much warmer pattern as soon as early June, following a ‘sluggish and sporadic’ spring season that has been notable for its wildly fluctuating temperatures.

The forecast does not point to persistent or severe heat throughout the summer, as a few cool fronts will track across the region and deliver periods of more refreshing conditions, the forecast said. The higher humidity is forecast to keep overnight temperatures significantly warmer than normal, but daytime high temperatures are expected to be near normal or just slightly above normal, it added.

Stretches of drier weather are likely during the summer, but no widespread or prolonged drought is expected, the Weather Network said. The muggy conditions will contribute to more frequent showers and the risk of powerful thunderstorms. As a result, most of the region should see near normal or above normal precipitation totals, it said.

On the other hand, The Weather Network is projecting hot, dry summer weather for the Canadian Prairies, thanks mainly to the extended influence of a heat dome expected to set up over the central US during the months of July and August.

According to the latest monthly update of the Canadian drought monitor, just 5% of the agricultural lands in the Central Region – which includes both Ontario and Quebec – was being impacted by abnormal dryness or some form of drought as of the end of April. That is way down from 34% at the end of March and over half in February.
