World Population to Top 8 Billion in New Year

There will be more than 75 million more mouths for the world’s farmers to feed in the New Year. 

The US Census Bureau on Thursday reported the world’s population will reach just over 8 billion on Jan. 1, 2024, up almost 1% or 75.16 million from the same date a year earlier. During January 2024, 4.3 births and 2 deaths are expected worldwide every second, the bureau said. 

The US population is projected at 335.89 million on Jan. 1, an increase of .53% from the previous year. 

Based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data, the current population of Canada is 38.94 million, annual increase of .85%. 

According to estimates compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the world will need to produce 60% more food to feed a world population of 9.3 billion by 2050.
