Johnston Hall

Johnston Hall

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED | JUNE 14, 1924 | CANADIAN COUNTRYMAN

This cartoon, published in the June 14, 1924 issue of the Canadian Countryman celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the Ontario Agricultural College (now part of the modern University of Guelph). The cartoon features Old Man Ontario (representing the people of the province) congratulating the stylized representation of Science and Agriculture on their successful marriage. The Old Residence building is depicted in the background, which would become popularly known as ‘Johnston Hall’ during the 1920s, after the founder of the OAC, William Johnston. The building was torn down and rebuilt in the 1930s officially as Johnston Hall, which functions today as a student residence and the office of the Dean of the OAC, as well as one of the University of Guelph’s most iconic landmarks.
