Canadian pork producers could soon receive greater clarity on the future use of zinc oxide in nursery diets, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) preparing an updated Notice to Industry.
The development comes after years of work by the Canadian Pork Council (CPC), which has been advocating since 2018 for continued access to zinc oxide in swine nursery diets.
According to an update shared by Alberta Pork on September 9, CPC has recently received new information from CFIA indicating that an updated industry notice is being prepared. Until that notice is released — or regulators confirm what information can be made public — CPC is holding back on a more detailed producer communication to ensure its guidance reflects the latest regulatory position.
For producers, that distinction is important: a final outcome has not yet been announced.
What has become clearer is that the zinc oxide file remains active and that the next formal steps are now in the hands of CFIA.
