
Governor General John Buchan (pictured) delivered his throne speech on Jan. 27, 1938 to open the third session of Canada’s 18th Parliament. William Lyon Mackenzie King served as prime minister.
In the speech, the governor general spoke of the government’s commitments to continue its work under the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act.
Prime Minister Bennett passed the law in 1935 to rehabilitate farmland in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta that suffered from drought, abandonment and overall degradation.
