Two Students Awarded for Agricultural Aspirations

Two young and aspiring agricultural students, Aliera Chernoff from Strathmore, AB, and Danielle Nagazina from Calgary, AB, have been named the winners of the 2024 Outstanding Young Farmers Memorial Scholarship.

Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship to further their agricultural education, enhancing their impact on Canadian agriculture.

Aliera Chernoff, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Agribusiness at Olds College, embodies a deep-rooted passion for farming, emphasizing the importance of food security and community nourishment.

Her experiences in agriculture reflect a life of stewardship and hard work, with visible results in crop yields and animal welfare.

On the other hand, Danielle Nagazina is set to acquire a Horticulture Technology Diploma at Olds.

With a past shadowed by food insecurity, Danielle aims to open a greenhouse to contribute safe and healthy food to her community. Her goal is to address the challenges of food insecurity by providing a sustainable food source.

The scholarship celebrates young individuals committed to making significant contributions to agriculture.

Applicants for the scholarship must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education in agriculture or be high school graduates entering agricultural studies. The selection process includes an essay demonstrating their passion for Canadian agriculture.

As part of the Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ program, now in its 44th year, the scholarship aims to promote excellence in farming among young Canadians aged 18 to 39, who primarily earn from on-farm sources.

The program, supported by several national sponsors including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and John Deere, selects winners from seven regions across Canada.

More information on the scholarship, including application details, can be found at Outstanding Young Farmers’ Memorial Scholarships. The deadline for the 2025 nominations is June 30.

Celebrating the vigor and innovation of young farmers, this program continues to highlight the pivotal role of agriculture in Canada’s economy and community life.

Evolution of Beef Cattle Farming

Video: Evolution of Beef Cattle Farming

The Clear Conversations podcast took to the road for a special episode recorded in Nashville during CattleCon, bringing listeners straight into the heart of the cattle industry. Host Tracy Sellers welcomed rancher Steve Wooten of Beatty Canyon Ranch in Colorado for a wide-ranging discussion that blended family history and sustainability, particularly as it relates to the future of beef production.

Sustainability emerged as a central theme of the conversation, a word that Wooten acknowledges can mean very different things depending on who you ask. For him, sustainability starts with the soil. Healthy soil produces healthy grass, which supports efficient cattle capable of producing year after year with minimal external inputs. It’s an approach that equally considers vegetation, animal efficiency, and long-term profitability.

That philosophy aligned naturally with Wooten’s involvement in the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, where he served as a representative for the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association. The roundtable brings together the entire beef supply chain—from producers to retailers—along with universities, NGOs, and allied industries. Its goal is not regulation, Wooten emphasized, but collaboration, shared learning, and continuous improvement.
