The theft took place near Ogema, the RCMP says

Saskatchewan RCMP is reminding producers to protect their farms after thieves made off with grain.

An April 30 release from the Coronach detachment states thieves stole about 5,000 bushels of grain from storage bins on a farm near Ogema, Sask.

That’s approximately the capacity of the Meridian GrainMax 5000, or the AGI Westeel 1806.

RCMP believe the theft occurred between spring 2024 and this April.

Police have also provided tips for farmers to help keep their properties safe.

One suggestion is to use grain confetti.

“Grain confetti consists of tiny pieces of paper that have a unique identification number on it,” the RCMP says. “This identification number links the grain to its owner. Grain confetti helps deter thieves and it makes your product identifiable in the event it is stolen.”

Cropgard and AgriDotDNA are examples of this kind of security measure.

Other suggestions from the RCMP include turning off unloading systems and keeping farms well lit.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call 310-RCMP, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com

Criminals have targeted farms recently.

Last month, for example, armed thieves trespassed and stole goods from multiple farms in Manitoba.

“It didn’t look real. You see six armed people get out of a vehicle and pointing guns all around. It’s just very alarming,” Mark Klippsenstein, who’s farm was targeted, told CTV News. “It’s definitely extremely brazen with just the armed individuals. It’s crazy.”

And in July 2024, Weyburn-Radville-Fillmore RCMP asked the public for information related to a stolen tractor.

A 2015 Massey Ferguson 1736 with a DL120 loader and finishing mower went missing from a farmyard.
