CPC urges farmers to prepare as the possibility of another postal strike
The national postal strike is temporarily on hold until May 22, 2025, but disruptions may resume immediately afterward, warns the Canadian Pork Council.
Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have re-entered negotiations, assisted by a mediator, following a breakdown in discussions in March. At that time, the two parties failed to reach a resolution. The existing collective agreements between Canada Post and CUPW will remain in effect until May 22, allowing mail service to continue uninterrupted for the time being.
However, the Canadian Pork Council is urging producers to plan ahead to avoid potential supply shortages. Specifically, the organization recommends swine farmers stock a four-month supply of PigTRACE ear tags—enough to cover the summer months—to mitigate the impact of possible shipping delays.
Given that parcel delivery typically takes two to three weeks and is expected to be further disrupted if the strike resumes, farmers are advised to place their orders as soon as possible.
The Canadian Pork Council emphasizes the importance of proactive planning to ensure smooth operations during the uncertain postal situation.
