Ag in Motion highlights farm safety

One speaker discussed his experiences after suffering burns

Attendees of Thursday’s 4-H Day at Ag in Motion near Saskatoon learned about the importance of safety on the farm.

4-H member Emma Panter said the presentations on electrical and fire safety contained important information for young people involved in agricultural operations to take home.

“I think it’ll be a lot safer for the kids around the farm,” she told CBC.

STARS air ambulance was on hand to give presentations about first aid. Other demonstrations focused on safety around ATVs and farm implements.

Safety first

Communications specialist for 4-H, Jodi Schellenberg, said with almost 3,000 members across the province and most of them coming from farm families, having them all in one place to talk safety was important.

“We thought it was a great idea to bring them all together and teach them a little about farm safety,” she told CBC.

The most impactful presentation may have come from Spencer Beach. 

Thirteen years ago, Beach was on a construction site using a chemical to install linoleum. The fumes ignited, leaving him severely burned.

“I was given a five per cent chance to live,” he told CBC.

His message to the 4-H members was to always understand what you’re doing before completing the task. He added that, before his incident, he felt like something wasn't right but ignored the feeling.

The 12-day war between Iran-Israel came to an end sending crude oil futures plunging as the big fund speculators removed the war risk premium.

Instead, funds were chasing and sending tech stocks higher with the S&P 500/NASDAQ indexes setting new all-time record highs!

June 1 USDA Hogs and pigs report was slightly bearish while the U.S. $ Index traded to new contract lows as the de-dollarization that began in 2014 continues.

Feed in the form of soybean meal futures for livestock producers got cheaper, trading to new contract lows.

The Stats Canada seeded acreage update was bullish canola and wheat.
