Saskatchewan’s producers were praised during the provincial legislature’s Speech from the Throne on Wednesday.

Farmers in the province exported more than $14 billion worth of ag products last year, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture.

Saskatchewan leads the country in agricultural exports and that fact needs to be celebrated, according to The Honourable Vaughn Solomon Schofield, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.

“Our farmers are the best in the world at what they do, and they have taken off another good crop, despite the challenges posed by nature,” she said during her speech. “Thanks to the efforts of our farmers, ranchers, researchers and processors, agriculture remains a pillar of our economy.”

Schofield also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to standing up for farmers.

All Canadian provinces have until 2018 to implement a carbon tax plan. If one isn’t reached by then, the federal government will impose a (carbon) price.

And with proposed federal tax changes that could make succession planning more difficult, Saskatchewan’s legislators will stand beside its farmers.

“We will stand up for our agricultural sector in opposing a federal carbon tax and federal small business tax changes that will hit farmers and ranchers hard,” Schofield said.

Saskatchewan’s Government also praised farmers for their commitment to helping the environment.

Farmers have been on the forefront of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, says Schofield.

“In 2015, our farmers sequestered nearly 12 million tonnes of carbon in our soil in large part thanks to zero till seeding technology developed in our province,” she said during her speech.
