Environmental Testing Continues to Show Negative Results

Alberta’s Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) has confirmed that, as of March 2, 2026, there are no new suspected cases of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) currently under investigation in the province. This update provides reassurance for producers and industry partners who have remained on high alert following earlier concerns.

Last week, as reported by Farms.com, Alberta's CVO confirmed the first PEDv case since 2022. (Read: Alberta Confirms First PEDv Case Since 2022). Laboratory testing validated the infection on February 21, 2026 at a farm in southern Alberta.

According to the latest information from the provincial investigation team, all environmental samples collected from designated high traffic sites had tested negative for PED as of February 27, 2026. These sites typically include assembly yards, transport hubs, and other areas where animal movement increases the potential for disease spread.

The continued string of negative results is viewed as a strong indication that enhanced biosecurity efforts across Alberta’s pork sector are working effectively. Provincial officials noted that producers, transporters, processors, and other stakeholders have demonstrated exceptional diligence in following heightened sanitation and monitoring protocols.

Despite the encouraging data, the PED investigation remains active. Alberta’s animal health authorities continue to collaborate closely with industry organizations and veterinary experts to monitor developments, trace potential risks, and verify that no new threats are emerging.

Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity practices, particularly in high-traffic areas and anywhere pigs are handled or transported. Continued vigilance will remain key to protecting the province’s swine herd and preventing the introduction or spread of the virus.
