Lifelong Learner Finishes Degree at 67
In 1976, a young farm boy named Dave Burnett enrolled in the University of Guelph’s agriculture program. Nearly five decades later, in 2025, Burnett has finally achieved his goal of graduating with a Bachelor of Science, according to the University of Guelph website.
Burnett’s journey was far from ordinary. Life took him through a series of twists and turns, including alcohol addiction and recovery, marriage and divorce, and serious health issues like skin cancer, a stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. He also built a career, raised a family, and even managed corporate farms, before starting his own accounting firm.
Though he often had to pause his education, Burnett never gave up. He returned to campus whenever he could, completing courses one at a time. At the age of 65, he qualified for a tuition waiver, which allowed him to rejoin the Ontario Agricultural College. With the help of supportive professors like Dr. Joshua Nasielski, he began taking applied animal science courses.
Burnett’s passion for learning inspired others. In fact, he delivered a guest lecture to his classmates and developed teaching materials that are still used today. His final research project on sulfur and nitrogen uptake in wheat cultivars earned him a grade of 90%, far exceeding his own expectations.
Reflecting on his journey, “Somewhere along the way, I became convinced of the wisdom of lifelong learning,” said Burnett. He hopes to inspire others by proving it is never too late to achieve your goals.
On convocation day, Burnett’s family, including two daughters and his wife, proudly watched him cross the stage. His story is a reminder of the strength of perseverance and the value of education—no matter your age.
