Celebrating and digitizing the last 150 years of success in the Canadian agriculture

Happy Canada Day!

Just in time for Canada Day, Farms.com has launched a farm and rural history section of the Farms.com portal: http://www.farms.com/reflections-on-farm-and-food-history/ .  The Farms.com farm and rural history pages are dedicated to celebrating and digitizing the last 150 years of success in the Canadian agriculture and food industry.

Farms.com is proud to be a part of the preservation and celebration of the agriculture and food industries in Canada.  As a sponsor of Country Heritage Park in Milton, Ontario, Farms.com recognizes the importance of historical preservation.

“The agriculture and food industries in Canada have a rich heritage of innovation, and have laid a foundation of excellence upon which we continue to grow,” says Farms.com President and Chief Executive Officer Graham Dyer.

“It is our hope, that this website will help to highlight the progressions and changes the industry has experienced, providing context to help understand the current state of the agriculture and food industries today.”

This Farm and Rual History website will shed light on leading companies and leading technologies and how they evolved -- how the industry evolved, as well as how society evolved.

“It is ironic that the success of farming (increasing yields, increasing production, streamlining methodology, etc), gave rise to cities.  Yet, in our 21st century every day lives, fewer and fewer people are connected to agriculture,” Dyer says.

“Sometime, it’s also enlightening to see how ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’,” laments Dyer.  “Hopefully this website will help the farming community to remember to keep things in perspective, and perhaps, help us from repeating the mistakes of the past, while always celebrating success.”

Much of the information included on the website came from the archives of Country Heritage Park in Milton, Ontario.

Farms.com is also inviting Canadians to share any agriculture history you may have.  If you have an old farming implement or tool, photograph, publication, or any other piece of farm and rural history you would like to share, please be sure to contact us at reflections@farms.com or by posting it on the website:  http://www.farms.com/reflections-on-farm-and-food-history/submit-article-ideas.

The website is also featuring the opportunities to win prizes throughout the summer.  There will be two prizes awarded each week; this week, farmers have the opportunity to win a $10 Tim Horton’s Gift card.

Farms.com is proud to be part of the farming community in the 21st century.  In 2017, Farms.com celebrates 20 years of providing information to farmers.  The online world has had a significant impact on how farmers get information related to their day to day operations, from news to markets, weather to machinery, best practices and “how-to” information -- it can all be found online now.

“It is our hope at Farms.com, that the reflections on farm and rural agriculture found on these pages will help to celebrate the people who feed, not only all Canadians, but people around the world. Happy Canada Day!”
