The Canadian dairy industry opposes the amendment made to a bill designed to protect supply management.
Canada’s supply managed sectors “are disappointed to see the heavy-handed amendments from the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade on Bill C-282.”
The amendment which passed on Nov. 6 by a 10-3 vote, only protects supply management in new trade negotiations.
This means access to Canada’s dairy market would still be available to the U.S., Mexico, and other established trading partners.
As of Nov. 26, the full Senate hasn’t yet voted on to adopt the amendment. If it passes, the bill goes back to the House of Commons for additional review.
