Farmall Tractors Then and Now - A Legacy Built on Innovation and Performance

For more than 100 years, the Farmall name has stood as one of the most recognizable brands in agricultural machinery. From its earliest days reshaping row‑crop farming to the launch of the 2025 CASE IH Farmall C, Farmall tractors have consistently evolved to meet the practical needs of farmers. Each new generation reflects a balance of durability, versatility, and forward‑thinking design—qualities that continue to define the Farmall legacy today.

The Beginning: Innovation Takes Root with the Farmall F Series

Innovation has been at the core of Farmall since the very beginning. The original Farmall tractor was introduced in the early 1920s by International Harvester as an all‑purpose machine capable of handling multiple farm tasks—a major shift away from single‑use tractors and animal power.

Shortly, the Farmall F series was launched, designed to give farmers a more powerful three‑plow tractor suitable for operations exceeding 200 acres. The F series introduced innovations such as a four‑speed transmission and a gasoline engine, offering improved performance and efficiency. During this era, Farmall established itself as a reliable partner for hardworking farmers.

An iconic moment in Farmall history followed when the tractors adopted their signature color: No. 50 Motor Red. That bold red finish remains a defining element of both the Farmall and Case IH brands today.

The Letter Series: A Design and Functional Breakthrough

The second generation of Farmall tractors arrived with the famous letter series, one of the most celebrated chapters in Farmall history. This lineup included the A and B models for smaller farms, the mid‑sized H, and the large M—offering solutions for nearly every farming operation.

One of the most revolutionary features of the letter series was Culti‑Vision seating, which repositioned the operator’s seat to the side of the tractor. This provided unmatched visibility for row‑crop work and fundamentally changed how farmers interacted with their fields.

The letter series also marked a leap forward in industrial design. Created with input from legendary designer Raymond Loewy, these tractors featured three silver stripes and a three‑dimensional nameplate, giving Farmall a modern, recognizable appearance. The Farmall H alone saw more than 390,000 units produced, making it one of the most popular row‑crop tractors in history.

The Super Series: Refinement and Durability

Building on the success of the letter series, Farmall introduced the Super series, beginning with the Super A, followed by the Super C (1951), Super M (1952), and Super H (1953). While these tractors maintained the proven designs of their predecessors, they added meaningful enhancements that improved performance and usability.

The Super C was especially notable for introducing the International Harvester Fast‑Hitch, a quick‑connect two‑point hydraulic hitch system paired with matching implements. This innovation improved efficiency and reduced downtime, reinforcing Farmall tractors’ reputation for practicality and long‑term reliability.

The Number Series: Entering the High‑Horsepower Era

As farming operations expanded, Farmall adapted again with the introduction of the number series, which replaced earlier naming conventions. Models like Super A and Super C transitioned into the 100 and 200 series, while new heavy‑hitters entered the field.

The Farmall 560 became one of the most popular tractors sold in the United States, while the Farmall 1206 made history as the first row‑crop tractor with more than 100 horsepower, earning a reputation as one of the toughest all‑purpose tractors of its era.

In 1963, the Farmall 706 and 806 debuted with advanced features including a four‑speed main transmission, two‑speed range box, optional torque amplifier (TA), power steering, and hydraulically actuated PTO. These upgrades made the 706 an instant favorite among Farmall loyalists and marked a pivotal moment in tractor comfort and convenience.

Farmall Under Case IH: The Utility Tractor Legacy

As the agricultural industry modernized, Farmall evolved with it. Under Case IH, Farmall became synonymous with versatile utility tractors—machines designed for livestock operations, mixed farming, material handling, mowing, and general farm work.

Across global markets, including Australia and New Zealand, the Farmall name has remained trusted for its heavy‑duty yet maneuverable frame, reliable torque, and quality construction. That heritage laid the groundwork for the next major step in the Farmall story.

The 2025 Farmall C: A Modern Expression of a Legendary Name

The legacy continues with the 2025 CASE IH Farmall C, a fully transformed utility tractor series delivering a fresh design, enhanced performance, and factory‑integrated precision technology. Available in two models—the Farmall 100 C (101 hp) and Farmall 120 C (117 hp)—the new Farmall C represents the most comfortable and versatile utility tractors in their class.

The latest models feature a striking modern exterior, improved visibility, and a wide range of LED lighting packages. A strengthened powertrain supports a 7,000‑kg gross vehicle mass and larger 540/65R38 rear tires, delivering a bigger footprint and greater stability.

Hydraulic capacity has increased to 82 LPM, paired with advanced mid‑mount valve joystick controls. Operator comfort has been elevated through cab suspension, a digital dash layout, and ActiveClutch, a brake‑to‑clutch feature that allows smooth stopping and restarting without using the clutch pedal.

The Farmall C series now offers fully integrated precision farming and telematics solutions straight from the factory. An optional gear‑lever‑mounted multi‑controller brings power shifting and power shuttling directly to the operator’s fingertips—technology once reserved for larger tractors.

From its revolutionary beginnings to the cutting‑edge 2025 Farmall C, the Farmall tractor has always been shaped by the real needs of farmers. Each generation builds on the last, combining time‑tested durability with meaningful innovation.
