Scientific Study Helps Farmers Control Superweed and Protect Sugar Beets Yields

Palmer amaranth, a fast-growing and highly destructive weed, has become a serious threat to sugar beets production. Known for producing large amounts of seeds and resisting many herbicides, this weed can cause major crop losses if not controlled in time. In some cases, losses have reached up to 70 percent, making it a major concern for farmers.

It has now reached western Nebraska; the weed was not a major issue until recent years. However, early warnings from scientist Nevin Lawrence helped prevent a large outbreak. Working at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Lawrence studied the behavior of this weed and searched for effective control methods.

His research focused on a herbicide called Goltix, which contains the active ingredient metamitron. While other researchers were unsure about its effectiveness, Lawrence identified the correct use rate that could control the weed while remaining safe and affordable for farmers. He also developed a strategy where Goltix is used early in the season to suppress the weed, followed by other herbicides later.

This work played a key role in gaining emergency approval from the Environmental Protection Agency to use Goltix in Nebraska and Colorado for multiple years. This approval gave farmers a valuable tool to protect their crops.

The impact of this research has been significant. Many growers used herbicide successfully, leading to improved yields and increased income. The results also showed that early action and proper planning can prevent serious damage to crops.

“It was timely, high-stakes work that helped protect a crop critical to the western region,” said Martha Mamo, head of the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.

Lawrence’s efforts highlight the importance of research in agriculture. His work not only helped control a dangerous weed but also supported farmers and strengthened the sugar beets industry. Today, this research is being recognized and applied in other regions, showing its wide impact.
