Agriculture calls for Urgent Government Action

Farmers across the G7 - including Canada -- are facing a perfect storm of economic, environmental, and geopolitical challenges that threaten the stability of global food systems.

In a joint statement released ahead of COP 30, representatives from G7 farmers’ organizations are calling on their governments to take decisive action to support the agricultural sector.

From soaring inflation and high interest rates to lingering financial shocks, the economic landscape has become increasingly volatile for farmers.

Trade disruptions and fractured supply chains are further compounding uncertainty, while the escalating impacts of climate change—frequent droughts, floods, and extreme weather events—are placing unprecedented strain on productivity and rural infrastructure.

Despite these pressures, G7 farmers remain at the forefront of efforts to ensure food security, drive innovation, and lead climate adaptation. Their role is not only vital to rural communities but also foundational to national and global economic resilience.

“This is a crucial moment for family farmers and ranchers across the world," says Rob Larew, President, National Farmers Union, USA in his statement.

"Economic, political and environmental challenges are putting the stability of agriculture at risk. Together with our G7 partners, we stand united in strengthening the conditions for farmers in the global marketplace, particularly by addressing the growing risks of consolidation in the agri-food chain. We must work collaboratively and intentionally to shape policies that are both environmentally sustainable and economically viable, ensuring agriculture continues to thrive for generations to come.”

“Canadian farmers, like our counterparts across the G7, are facing complex challenges that demand coordinated, forward-thinking solutions," continues Keith Currie, President, Canadian Federation of Agriculture.

"We are committed to working with our global partners to strengthen food security, drive innovation, and advance climate resilience. With the right tools, policies, and support, farmers can continue to lead the way toward a more sustainable and secure future for all.”

“Every day, farmers and growers are out in the fields producing food for the global population, while also looking after our planet and supporting economic growth," stated Tom Bradshaw, President, National Farmers Union, UK.

"But with climate change, geo-political tensions and a volatile trading environment, this is becoming harder. That is why we’re urging G7 government to help provide stability and certainty, both in terms of trading systems and enabling policies which support innovation, productivity and efficiency in farming across the world.”

In their joint statement, G7 farm leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a more sustainable and prosperous agricultural future. They urged G7 governments to:

  • Support transparent, rules-based trade to stabilize markets and ensure access.
  • Prioritize innovation by expanding access to advanced tools and technologies for all farmers.
  • Modernize outdated regulations that hinder competitiveness and efficiency.
  • Advance science-based, incentive-driven climate policies that promote soil health, boost productivity, and enhance long-term resilience.

As the world prepares for COP 30, the statement emphasizes the need to recognize farmers as essential partners in achieving global climate and development goals.

“Farmers are not just food producers—they are innovators, stewards of the land, and key players in the fight against climate change,” the statement reads. “A strong, sustainable agricultural sector is essential to economic stability, environmental stewardship, and global cooperation.”

G7 farmers are deeply integrated into global agri-food markets and play a pivotal role in driving technological advancement and system-wide stability. Their message is clear: with the right support, agriculture can be a cornerstone of a more secure and sustainable future.
