Veteran broadcaster earns award for five decades of ag reporting

Veteran agricultural journalist Harry Siemens has been honored with the North American Farm Reporting Excellence Award. This award recognizes his more than 50 years of service in agricultural communication across Canada and North America.

The award was created by well-known U.S. farm broadcasters Lynn Ketelsen, Max Armstrong, and the late Orion Samuelson. These industry leaders wanted to recognize Siemens for his lifelong dedication to reporting on agriculture and for building strong relationships between Canadian and American farmers.

Siemens began his career in Western Canada at CJOV Radio in Winkler, Manitoba. He later worked at CFAM Radio in Altona, where he became a trusted voice for Prairie farmers. Over time, his work reached a wider audience through a growing network of agricultural radio stations.

He was also an early adopter of digital communication in agriculture. Before the internet became widely used, Siemens recognized its value. He shared farm news through reports, interviews, podcasts, columns, and online articles. This helped him connect with farmers across Canada and beyond.

One of his well-known features, “Siemens Says,” provided thoughtful insights and commentary on agricultural topics. This work helped farmers stay informed and better understand industry changes.

Armstrong reflected on Siemens' impact and friendship over the years. "Orion and I, in our broadcasting partnership, had spoken often of Harry's numerous contributions and the valuable assistance that he provided to us," said Armstrong. "Harry has been a trusted voice for agriculture and an important bridge between Canadian and American farmers."Added Ketelson: "We just felt we should present a formal award to Harry Siemens. Without great fanfare, Harry has reached across the border on numerous occasions, fostering improved understanding and better relationships between our farmers."

Throughout his career, Siemens has reported on key topics such as crop production, livestock, trade, weather, and farm policy. His work has earned him respect from farmers, industry leaders, and fellow broadcasters.
