Over $400 million to tackle drought in key western river basins

The Southwest faces mounting water challenges, with the Colorado River and Rio Grande under severe drought pressure. Congress allocated $4 billion in 2022 through the Inflation Reduction Act to address these concerns.

Recently, over $400 million in funding was announced by the Bureau of Reclamation, targeting drought resilience projects in these critical basins.

The Colorado River Basin received $388 million to fund over 40 projects in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming. These initiatives focus on restoring rivers, wetlands, and forests while enhancing water conservation and habitat restoration.

Similarly, $29 million was allocated to the Upper Rio Grande region for projects supporting water security and biodiversity in areas like Colorado’s San Luis Valley and northern New Mexico.

American Rivers collaborated with applicants on key initiatives, including the Mesa County Conservation District’s floodplain restoration efforts and the Teacup Restoration Project. These programs aim to reduce sediment, improve water quality, and enhance habitats for species such as the yellow-billed cuckoo.

“These investments demonstrate Reclamation’s commitment to mitigating drought and are an excellent first step in acknowledging the importance of healthy rivers,” emphasized American Rivers. Sustainable management is vital to protect these water systems for future generations.
