Maryland’s January agricultural calendar

Events and meetings go until January 30

Agriculture professionals and enthusiasts around Maryland will have a number of opportunities to get educated and voice their thoughts on issues surrounding agriculture, farming, and food in the Old Line State.

Friday, January 16 
Maryland Horse Industry Board meetings
At 10 a.m. at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) will meet to discuss MHIB initiatives and also will feature updates from board representatives and reports from stable inspectors.

From 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the MHIB’s Health Advisory Committee will meet to discuss equine health care. Dr. Jo Chapman, veterinarian with Maryland’s Department of Agriculture will also be in attendance.

The MHIB will also have a booth at the World Horse Expo, taking place January 16-18 at the fairgrounds.

Tuesday, January 20
Poultry and Rabbit On-Farm Processing Training
From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) will host on-farm processing training for poultry and rabbit producers. Producers that choose to participate will receive certification and be considered an approved source by Maryland’s Department of Mental Health and Hygiene and can sell at restaurants, retailers and farmer’s markets intrastate. Registration is $25.

Thursday, January 22
Maryland Buyer-Grower Expo
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the MDA will host a local, wholesale food trade show at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium- “N” Room, in Annapolis. Growers, producers, and processors with buyers from grocers will be there.

Friday, January 30
State of the Science of Phosphorus
Starting at 8:00 a.m. at Chesapeake College, the symposium will feature Dr. Andrew Sharpley, Dr. Douglas Smith and Dr. Frank Coale among others to engage in discussion about phosphorus and the roles it plays on water quality, soil, and how to minimize its loss from agricultural land. Registration is $30.
