Innovative Lactobacillus research aims to control Streptococcus suis infections

Swine Innovation Porc (SIP) is investing in new research to address Streptococcus suis, a harmful bacterial disease affecting post-weaned piglets led by Dongyan Xu Niu at the University of Calgary. This disease can cause serious health problems such as respiratory illness, meningitis, and sudden death, leading to economic losses for pork producers.

The research project  focuses on developing an innovative biological solution. Scientists aim to use beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria, which are naturally found in animals, to deliver special enzymes known as bacteriophage endolysins. These enzymes can break down and destroy harmful bacteria like Streptococcus suis without affecting beneficial microbes.

The three-year study will involve identifying and improving these enzymes, integrating them into Lactobacillus strains, and testing their effectiveness in protecting piglets from infection. This approach may provide a safer and more targeted way to control disease while reducing the need for traditional antimicrobial treatments.

“Strategic research investments like this help ensure Canadian producers have access to innovative tools and solutions to address priority health challenges in the barn,” said Mark Ferguson, Chair of Swine Innovation Porc.

The project is supported through SIP’s research funding program, which encourages innovative solutions to key challenges in the pork sector. The investment aims to strengthen animal health management and improve productivity on farms.

Industry leaders have highlighted the importance of such research in helping producers manage disease risks and maintain sustainable operations. By supporting collaboration between scientists and the pork industry, the program ensures that research outcomes are practical and beneficial.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to support one- to three-year research projects that focus on improving the resilience and competitiveness of the pork sector. By exploring new technologies and approaches, the industry can better respond to health challenges and changing market demands.

“This project reflects the type of collaborative, forward-looking research we aim to support through the Advancing Swine Research Call for Proposals,” said Daniel Ramage, General Manager of SIP. “By bringing together leading researchers and industry priorities, we’re helping advance solutions that strengthen the long-term resilience and competitiveness of Canada’s pork sector.”

Overall, this research represents a forward-looking step toward improving piglet health, enhancing farm efficiency, and supporting long-term sustainability in swine production.
