New hub helps farmers plan respond and recover from farm emergencies

A new initiative has been introduced in Canada to strengthen farm safety and emergency readiness. The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association has launched an Emergency Preparedness Hub designed to support farmers, families, workers, and rural communities.

The hub brings together important tools, practical guides, and useful resources in one place. It includes materials developed by experts as well as links to provincial, national, and sector-based information. The goal is to help farms prepare for emergencies, respond effectively, and recover quickly after unexpected events.

Farms play a vital role as workplaces, homes, and key contributors to the food supply system. Because of this, emergency preparedness is becoming increasingly important.

“Canadian farms are workplaces, homes, and the backbone of our food supply chain, which is why emergency preparedness on farms isn’t an option — it’s essential,” said Sandra Miller, CASA’s Executive Director.

“CASA is proud to introduce the Emergency Preparedness Hub to help farmers proactively plan for emergencies. Because preparedness isn’t just about responding to emergency situations, it’s also about building resilient farms and farming communities,” says Miller.

The need for such resources has grown due to rising natural disasters and climate-related risks. In recent years, Canada has experienced some of its worst wildfire seasons. The 2025 wildfire season was one of the most severe, following the record-breaking 2023 season that burned millions of hectares. These events have increased awareness about the importance of preparedness in agriculture.

The hub aims to guide farmers in protecting their families, workers, livestock, and overall livelihood. It encourages farms to develop clear emergency plans and use available resources to reduce risks. Being prepared can help minimize damage and ensure quicker recovery during difficult situations.

The launch of this hub also aligns with Agricultural Safety Week, which promotes safe farming practices and highlights the importance of everyday safety. Emergency preparedness is a key focus of this campaign, reinforcing the message that safety should always be a priority.

Overall, the Emergency Preparedness Hub is a valuable step toward building stronger and more resilient farming communities. By improving access to information and planning tools, it supports farmers in facing future challenges with confidence and readiness.
