Interactive online farm tours help students learn how apples go from trees to tables

New York apple growers have launched a new virtual education initiative titled “Better by the Bushel” to help students learn how apples travel from orchards to consumers. The interactive program is designed for students in kindergarten through grade twelve and connects classrooms directly with farmers and food processors.

The six-part series begin this spring with three live virtual events. Each session runs for 30 to 45 minutes and is hosted online through Zoom. Students can take part in real-time discussions, ask questions, and interact with experts working in New York’s apple industry.

The events are also live-streamed and recorded, allowing teachers and students to watch them later if they cannot attend live.

“This series brings the story of New York apples directly into classrooms while highlighting the important partnership between agriculture and education,” said New York State Apple Marketing Order Chairman Randy Pratt.

“By connecting students with growers and processors, we are helping them better understand where their food comes from and the many careers involved in agriculture,” said Pratt.

The first session, scheduled for May 6, explores how apples are transformed into cold-pressed juice. Students will see how fruit moves from orchard branches to bottled beverages.

The second event on May 27 highlights the engineering and science behind apple orchards, including tree cultivation and grafting techniques.

The third session on June 4 focuses on how apples are processed into products such as slices and applesauce.

The program highlights the strong link between agriculture and education while introducing students to different careers in farming, food processing, and technology.

Growers hope the series will help young learners better understand where food comes from and how teamwork and innovation support the agricultural system.

Teachers can register for upcoming events through the Virtual Farm Trips website. Recordings will also be available on demand and through a related educational YouTube channel. The project is funded by New York apple growers and supported by state agricultural partners.
