Photographers captured some stunning photos

In an industry where putting one’s head down and getting to work is the norm, farmers and rural residents in the Prairies who took a minute look up a few nights go would’ve been treated to a special light show.

Northern lights activity is currently elevated to high, AuroraForecast.com says.

“Weather permitting, significant northern lights displays would be visible directly overhead through many parts of Canada, Alaska and the very northern parts of the continental U.S.”

And photographers have the evidence.

Todd Korol, for example, a photographer with Reuters, snapped a picture of the northern lights above a grain elevator in Brant, Alta., on Oct. 7.

The elevator is a former Alberta Wheat Pool elevator now owned by Brant Farms Ltd. and remains in use, the Grain Elevators of Canada website says.

Korol also drove to Herronton, Alta., about 15 minutes away, to get more farm photos of the northern lights.

One picture shows the lights above the community’s wooden grain elevator, which also belonged to the Alberta Wheat pool.

Another photograph has the northern lights shining over the top of nine Westeel grain bins.

In Saskatchewan, photographer and severe weather chaser Jenny Hagan captured images of the northern lights above the grain elevator in Laporte on Oct. 8.

The Sask Wheat Pool built the elevator in 1968.

People in Manitoba were treated to the northern lights show as well.

Judi Watt captured photos of slihouettes of her horses contrasted with the northern lights.

Mazergroup, a New Holland dealership group, posted a photo it received from Steven Shenderevich near Roblin, Man., on Oct. 8.

The picture shows the New Holland logo on a combine followed by the aurora borealis.

And Donna Lach, a farmer who takes pictures of the northern lights, captured multiple photos of the event on Oct. 9.

One, for example, shows a tractor with the northern lights above it.

Meet Willy: California Farm Bureau’s 2025 Farm Dog of the Year!

We’re excited to introduce Willy, a miniature long-haired dachshund with a big heart and even bigger courage, and the Grand Prize winner of this year’s Farm Dog of the Year Contest!

Willy may be small, but he’s become an indispensable partner on owner Marshal Hagedorn’s forestry and cattle operations in Shasta, Tehama, and Siskiyou counties. Adopted in 2023, he quickly found his place on the ranch, helping manage critters, tagging along for long days in the woods, and offering unwavering companionship during demanding logging work.

Willy has even taken naturally to moving cattle, surprising calves (and more than a few full-grown cows!) with his burst of energy from the tall grass. As Marshal put it: “He goes with me everywhere every single day.”

Congratulations to Willy and his family, a perfect example of how every good farm dog, no matter the size, helps keep California agriculture running strong.
