The recall has only collected 807 signatures with nine days left until the deadline

The recall against Alberta’s minister of agriculture is likely to fail.

With only nine days remaining to collect signatures, organizers in Minister RJ Sigurdson’s riding of Highwood have only secured 807 of the 15,788 (5.1 per cent) signatures required to recall the minister, according to RecallRJ.ca.

Canvassers would have to collect an average of 1,664 signatures per day to reach their goal by the Feb. 22 deadline.

Minister Sigurdson and other UCP MLAs were included in Operation Total Recall.

This movement, which started in the fall, targeted MLAs and ministers who voted in favour of using the notwithstanding clause to end a teachers’ strike.

The related bill imposed new contracts on 51,000 teachers and prohibits teachers from striking until August 2028.

A teacher from Sigurdson’s riding, Molly Metcalf, organized the recall against the minister.

Three recalls are complete.

The recall against Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides in Calgary-Bow was unsuccessful with 6,519 of 16,006 (41 per cent) of signatures collected.

The recall against Airdrie-East MLA Angela Pitt only collected 15 per cent (2,200 of 14,813) of the required signatures.

And the recall against Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz, the MLA for Calgary-Shaw, ended with her announcing her resignation from cabinet and as an MLA.

“Timing is everything in life and in politics and it is time for me to seek new opportunities in my career,” she said in a Dec. 31 statement.
