Ford is recalling F-150s and Rangers for different reasons
Trucks are as synonymous with farming as equipment is.
Kip Moore’s song Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck, for example, starts with the lyric, “There’s somethin’ ‘bout a truck in a farmer’s field.”
And like farm equipment, pickup trucks can break down or be subject to recalls.
As it turns out, multiple trucks are under recall for different reasons.
Ford is recalling trucks from two of its brands.
Ford is recalling about 1.4 million trucks (roughly 144,000 in Canada) with a 6-speed automatic transmission manufactured between 2014 and 2017 because of transmission issues.
“An intermittent failure of the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor in the transmission may result in an unintended downshift to first gear,” Ford’s website says. “This can cause the rear tires to slide until the vehicle speed slows down and could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.”
The OSS measures the speed of the transmission’s output shaft and sends that information to the powertrain control module (PCM).
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report attributes the issue to a degradation of electrical connections due to thermal cycling and vibration.
F-150 owners are encouraged to visit the Ford or NHTSA websites to determine if their truck is part of the recall.
Affected vehicles will receive a reprogrammed PCM with software preventing the downshift at no cost to the customer.
Ford Rangers are part of a separate recall.
About 180,000 units (15,000 in Canada) manufactured between 2024 and 2026 are part of a recall related to pivot bolts in the front seat frame.
“On certain vehicles, the pivot bolts in the height adjuster assembly for the front seats may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the bolt(s) could loosen and detach. If this happens, the seat(s) could move in a crash,” Transport Canada says.
This recall also applies to Broncos from the same time period.
Ford is expected to notify vehicle owners and advise them to bring their vehicles to a dealership for inspection and repair.
Ram trucks are also part of a recall.
More than 6,000 2026 Ram 2500 trucks in the U.S. (about 660 in Canada) are being recalled for an issue with the electronic stability control (ESC) system.
Some of these vehicles “may have been built with a Steering Column Control Module which can experience an internal fault and disable the Electronic Stability Control,” the NHTSA says.
This fault would also result in the ESC warning light coming on, Transport Canada says.
Ram owners can enter their VIN online to see if their vehicles are affected.
