The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) takes a strong step forward in food safety with the opening of its new Midwestern Food Safety Laboratory in Normandy, Missouri. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins leads this important event, emphasizing the USDA’s efforts to protect consumers from foodborne illnesses and support a safer food system.

Secretary Rollins will officially open the new lab operated by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). She will also announce a significant food safety policy plan aimed at reducing the spread of foodborne diseases in the United States.

This event highlights the USDA’s commitment to modernizing food safety measures. By opening this laboratory, the USDA strengthens its ability to test food products, study safety risks, and respond to outbreaks more effectively. The lab will play a key role in improving public health and ensuring safer food supplies.

Joining Secretary Rollins at the event will be Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, showing the strong partnership between federal and state leaders in protecting food safety. Media representatives are invited to attend, with setup beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT.

The USDA’s new policy announcement is expected to cover stronger measures for food safety inspections, enhanced testing, and improved response plans for foodborne illness outbreaks.
