In a significant boost to global food security, the USDA is investing $466.5 million into two key international programs. This announcement, made by Secretary Tom Vilsack at the Clinton Global Initiative 2024, highlights the U.S. commitment to reducing global hunger and enhancing agricultural practices worldwide.

Of the total funding, $248 million is earmarked for the McGovern-Dole program to support food and education in schools across nine countries, aiming to reach over a million children. This support is crucial for boosting educational outcomes and nutrition, especially among girls.

The Food for Progress program will utilize $218.5 million to help seven countries develop more sustainable and productive agricultural systems, adopting modern, climate-smart technologies and improving trade opportunities.

These investments are designed to provide both immediate relief by way of food aid and long-term benefits through education and agricultural development.

The USDA’s efforts signify a comprehensive approach to tackling food insecurity and promoting international agricultural cooperation. Further information and updates on these programs can be found through USDA’s resources online.
