Relief programs and loans assist producers with drought recovery needs
Agricultural operations in Louisiana are facing major challenges due to ongoing drought conditions. Crops, livestock, land, and water supplies are under stress, increasing financial pressure on farmers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is offering a range of programs to help producers recover and prepare for future droughts.
“We know current drought conditions are adversely impacting crops, land, water supplies, and livestock, creating financial and emotional strain for the farmers and ranchers we serve,” said Farm Production and Conservation Under Secretary Richard Fordyce.
Fordyce added, “I encourage producers to stay in close contact with their local USDA Service Center to report losses and damages and learn more about the many program options we have available to assist them in building drought resiliency and navigating drought recovery.”
Livestock producers who have suffered grazing losses may qualify for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program. To be eligible, producers must own or lease livestock and confirm that losses occurred due to drought. Acreage reporting for grazing land must be completed by July 15, 2026, and applications for payment must be submitted by March 1, 2027.
The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program helps cover increased costs for hauling water, feed, or moving livestock. It also supports beekeepers who lose feed due to drought. Applications for this program are also due by March 1, 2027.
Tree growers may receive cost-share support under the Tree Assistance Program for replanting or rehabilitating damaged trees. Farmers may also access emergency and operating loans to replace damaged property, purchase inputs, or manage expenses.
Crop producers are encouraged to report losses quickly to qualify for risk protection programs. Conservation programs can help improve soil health and water use, reducing future drought impacts.
The U.S. Drought Monitor continues to provide weekly updates, helping determine eligibility for assistance programs and guiding recovery decisions.
