Dairy leaders push for stronger trade rules across North America

Leaders from the U.S. dairy sector are increasing efforts to strengthen the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) as the trade pact enters its review phase.

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and dairy cooperatives have been working with government officials, trade partners, and industry groups to ensure the agreement continues to support dairy farmers and processors.

As part of these efforts, Michael Lichte, Chief Insights and Optimization Officer for Dairy Farmers of America, testified before the House Committee on Agriculture in June.

“The underlying market distortions USMCA sought to discipline continue to affect U.S. manufacturers and global dairy protein markets,” he said. “With appropriate enforcement and modernization, USMCA can continue supporting investment, export growth, and economic opportunity for the United States’ dairy farmers and processors for generations to come.”

Another major issue discussed was the protection of common cheese names in Mexico. Dairy industry leaders stressed the importance of allowing U.S. exporters to continue using names such as feta, which have faced challenges due to geographical indication policies promoted by the European Union.

NMPF Executive Vice President Shawna Morris also provided input during trade discussions between the United States and Mexico. Meanwhile, NMPF President and CEO Gregg Doud participated in an international trade panel that included representatives from Mexico and Canada. The discussion focused on targeted adjustments that could improve the agreement and support future growth.

In addition, NMPF and the U.S. Dairy Export Council joined more than 150 agricultural organizations in signing a letter urging trade officials from all three countries to strengthen and renew USMCA.

Industry leaders believe that better enforcement and modernization of the agreement can help expand exports, encourage investment, and create long-term opportunities for dairy communities across North America.
